Do it Yourself

Do it Yourself

I've got to admit, I'm someone that absolutely loves the idea of DIY (do it yourself) but I didn't know how to start and what I should work on. Most people begin by creating something they want in their lives, like building a little green heaven in a terrarium jar, or going to that pottery class to create a flower vase or decorative centrepiece.

For me, I didn't want to work on something too hard, like anything that involved sawing pieces of wood in half, or anything that would take patience and skill like weaving an amazing patterned fabric. I wanted my first DIY project to wow guests as soon as they step into my home and give me that motivational push to do more. In other words, I wanted something awesome and SIMPLE to do.

I love hunting for treasures at vintage shops, you just never know what you'll find. Especially when it's a gem shining amongst the rubble. And there she was, at the corner of my eye. A beautiful sewing machine table base for $50 and at that moment I just knew. I've found my very first DIY project.

After sanding it down and wiping off all kinds of nasty on the frame, I got into zen mode and began painting it gold. I knew it would naturally give off a retro feel to the space but I didn't want it to be too industrial - Painting it gold felt like a natural fit with all my glass decanters and wood furniture pieces in the living room.

It wasn't all peaches and cream at first. I tried using a spray can thinking it would speed it along. Nope. Wouldn't recommend it unless you live in a warehouse and don't mind the occasional sting in the eye, mess and smell. Also, it ended up looking terrible.

The look on my face was just pure disappointment

I then resorted to the old school method, painting it by hand. It took me only a few hours back and forth coating it with layers of paint. In the meantime, I went to IKEA and found myself a glass top to match, and after just half a day, my DIY project was complete.

I'm still styling the table every now and then, moving things around because I haven't quite found the right kind of decor yet. But here are a few inspirational images I love that should help guide me along the way. I'm now a firm believer of DIY. As my mum used to say, if you want a thing done well, do it yourself. And so I did.

Give it a try, the result just might have you back for more.
